With over 40 years of teaching violin, viola and cello, LisaJo provides a thorough, meaningful experience tailored to each of her students. Learning to play the violin from LisaJo will be different from other teachers. She actively identifies your unique learning style and personality, ensuring you'll get the most out of your lessons. She draws from a variety of styles such as those which highlight the mental and social aspects of playing the violin. By studying with LisaJo Borchers, you may become inspired by the power of music and how it aligns with your mind, body and spirit.
Adapting for the Digital Age
By creatively utilizing modern streaming technology and the aid of software, LisaJo has expertly adapted her teaching methods for the digital age. You can take lessons from the comfort of your home or office by using Zoom, a webcam, a large enough screen, and a wired headset.
All skill levels welcome
Lisa Jo will meet you at whatever stage you are in your musical journey. She teaches age 12 and up and is a recognized teacher of the adult beginner and adult restart.
Ensure that your violin has been purchased or rented from a reputable music store.
If you have inherited a family instrument, it must be in playing condition
We will use Zoom for our lessons. Make sure that in the settings tab it is set to use Real Audio.
Note: a Bluetooth headset will not work due to the software that I use.
Make sure your screen is large enough for you to see my picture as well as your lesson materials. A cell phone screen will not be large enough.
Steeped with knowledge of music history, theory and composition, LisaJo has a Bachelor of Music Education from Eastern Illinois University and extensive orchestral-performance experience as a violinist and conductor. Drawing from more than 40 years of private studio experience, she has developed her abilities as a diagnostician of obstacles in the musical learning process--both cognitive and physical. LisaJo teaches ages 12 and up and has become a recognized teacher of the adult beginner and adult restart. She takes a very individualized approach with her students, recognizing technical and emotional components to each individual's learning process.
Her Technique
LisaJo has studied with teachers from various violin lineages. Her technique is based on the teachings of Carl Flesch and Ivan Galamian.
Additionally LisaJo studied with Kato Havas, whose New Approach to String Teaching has been acknowledged by the American String Teachers Association as one of the three main string methods in the world. "The New Approach" is not a method in the ordinary sense of the word. It is a highly organized system which prevents and eliminates tensions and anxieties. It highlights the physical, mental and social aspects of performance with special reference to violin playing (although the principles apply equally to other instruments). It unifies mind, body and spirit, and coordinates the natural balances of the body into an effortless and powerful whole." Havas' focus on communication between mind and body in the music-making process has been incorporated deeply in LisaJo's teaching style. LisaJo is one of the few teachers in the United States educated in the New Approach.

I had the privilege of learning the violin under the guidance this teacher for over a year now. LisaJo is a passionate, hard-working, and accommodating mentor who goes above and beyond to foster a love for music. She consistently puts in the time and effort to prepare engaging and tailored lessons that cater to my development. Her commitment is evident in the way she plans lessons, introduces challenging and rewarding exercises, and provides constructive feedback. It's clear that she genuinely cares about your progress and is dedicated to helping you achieve your musical goals. I highly recommend her as a teacher.

LisaJo is an incredible teacher. I was hoping to take in-person lessons, but due to the pandemic I (reluctantly) opted for online instead. All my doubts have been cast away... LisaJo's infectious enthusiasm leaps through the screen and her competencies as both a teacher and musician are evident through her ability to provide clear, creative instruction that translates directly into progress. I always look forward to my lessons - I'm learning lots but also having a great time with it :) I super recommend LisaJo if you're looking to learn violin!

Best teacher ever!!!!! I went from knowing absolutely nothing about the violin to playing in the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra after 2yrs of lessons. Through our lessons together Mrs. Lisa Jo taught me technique yes, but she also taught me so much more. She instilled in me a love for music and it’s many intricacies that I will cherish forever. Truly an amazing teacher

I had the privilege of being one of LisaJo's private violin students back when she was teaching in Naperville, IL. I had her as my private teacher for about four to five years before she moved away.
I have to say that in that time, she taught me all of the best fundamental aspects of violin playing that I implement to this very day as an instructor and performer. These aspects include posture, technique, sound quality, tone, bow styles, repertoire history, and more. It was Lisa's love of violin playing and teaching that gave me the roots that I needed to become an accomplished musician and overall performer. It has been roughly 11 years since I've had LisaJo as my private teacher. But we are still in contact as if she was still my instructor. Currently, I am now a qualified orchestra director at a high school, I teach out of my own private studio, and I also have my BS in Music and MM in String Pedagogy. I can say with my professional opinion that with LisaJo as your private teacher, you will be well taken care of in your tutelage of learning the violin.
